Solar Interest: Group Purchase Discounts for Installing Solar on Your House

Various homeowners have expressed an interest in the possibility of reducing the costs of installing a photovoltaic system on their roof by engaging in a group purchase/installation. The City of San Jose is encouraging this practice as a way of further reducing costs on top of the 30% federal tax credit and the incentive/rebate from the State of California.
The Santa Teresa Foothills Neighborhood Association is coordinating an effort to see if there are homeowners who would be interested in this type of group purchase. Here's an example of how it would work: Let's say we get 10 homeowners who are willing to participate in this program. With assistance from the City, we would put out a request for quotes to local solar installers, telling them that we're looking for bids to install solar on ten homes. The installers would compete against each other to provide the lowest bid. Of course, the more homeowners who are interested, the greater our buying power and the greater our discount!
